A Cloud a Day - Day Sixteen - 20th April 2011

A rather industrial start to the day - and a thin grey cloud cover to the sky, so that the sun seemed to burst out from behind the cctv camera...

The rest of the day was blue skies, and then in the late afternoon, cumulus...

A Cloud a Day - Day Fifteen - 19th April 2011

I couldn't decide, again... Today was a good day for clouds... well, this morning especially as the first three were all taken before 8.00am! The second one has been slightly manipped so that the contrast was a bit clearer - it looked like a contrail that was dissipating upwards instead of uniformly outwards as they usually do. If I hadn't been on the way to work (in my car!) I'd've taken time to make a better photograph...

A distrail in London! The Cloud Collector's Handbook says that this is "The opposite of a contrail... when a plane cuts out a gap as it flies through a cloud layer. This happens when the heat and turbulence of its engine make the cloud droplets evaporate, or when it introduces icing nuclei that encourage the clouds supercooled droplets to freeze and fall below."

These were taken tonight from the rooftop carpark of my local supermarket

Think people must have thought I was a bit daft as I left my loaded shopping trolley parked behind my parked car to run off and snap them:D

Well, I was quite happy with my whale-cloud today...

And then I looked out the window and saw these, which were brilliantly doom-laden... *g*

A Cloud a Day - Day Seven - 11th April 2011

I really need to curb my "Cloud a day" pics to just the one cloud, don't I... But I couldn't resist this sequence - after being so sunny at the weekend, and then just a bit cloudier today, I looked up from my desk around four this afternoon to see big dark clouds, and the trees thrashing side to side in the wind! A few drops of rain, some more menacing from above, and then it was all over again - sunshine and blue skies, tattered skirts of clouds... and then another gathering on the horizon, which became a darkening again... *g*

Homage to cirrus... and contrails...

...and the moon, high in the corner, and wee like in mothfic2's pic! *g*

Manchester - April

I wanted to copy byslantedlight but the clouds weren't playing! I was in the garden most of this afternoon and eventually spotted faint cloud and a con trail over our neighbour's roof. The rest of the sky was uniformly blue. My camera isn't good enough (or I'm not!) to capture the moon which was just visible in the top of the picture to the naked eye.

It was hard to find any clouds in the sky again today - at least in Suffolk. By the time I got back to Cambs. though, there were clouds a-plenty, brushed across the sky...

A gorgeous day for cirrus clouds - and warm! So hard to believe that these wisps are made of ice crystals...

A Cloud a Day - Day One - 5th April 2011

So - inspired by the Clouds365 project, and by watching a programme about clouds made by The Cloud Appreciation Society, I thought I should make more of an effort to lug my camera around with me and take pictures of the gorgeous clouds - and even the less gorgeous ones (like those covering the sky tonight - in fact all of today...) So, starting today, I'm going to make an effort to post a cloud a day - I'll try and make them look pretty, I promise, but... well, I suspect I won't always manage it, witness today's pic...

In further cloud-news, if you live in England, then The National Climate Survey is calling for your help between March-June this year. They'd like as many people as possible to look out for and record contrails in the sky, to help them find out how contrails may be affecting the weather and climate.

If it weren't for all that nimbostratus out there (well, and the fact that it's dark), there might be loads of contrails out there right now, because I can hear fighter jets roaring in the distance, and not long ago another flight of them passed very close by... although perhaps they don't make contrails as much as the slower jets... Hmmn - I'll have to find out...
